It may surprise you to find out that there’s a natural way to get highlights and lighten your hair!

Summer is upon us, and many of us are looking to brighten up our hair for the season. Most people usually opt for regular hair dye, but that can be very damaging.

It tends to make the hair weaker and prone to breakage. Plus, you have to spend all that time and money at the salon.

If you want a natural, healthy way to brighten up your hair and boost your hair growth, try chamomile tea. It does take longer than traditional hair dye, but is much gentler on your hair. And you can easily DIY at home!

Chamomile also has a ton of other benefits. Whether you want to lighten your hair, stimulate hair growth, or calm an irritated scalp, chamomile tea is the way to go. Here is all about how to use chamomile tea for DIY hair lightening and hair growth.

How to Use Chamomile Tea for Hair Lightening & Growth

Here are two methods that you can do at home. For either of these, you can use chamomile tea bags or dried chamomile flowers if you have them available to you.

Method 1: Chamomile Hair Rinse

The first method is a super easy hair rinse! Here’s how to do it:

  • Brew 2-5 bags of chamomile tea in 4-5 cups of water
  • Allow the tea to cool
  • On detangled hair, pour the tea over your entire hair and scalp (if your hair has product buildup, shampoo first and apply the tea on damp hair)
  • If you are less interested in changing your hair color and want to focus on hair growth and scalp health, simply leave it on for 15-20 minutes, then rinse out. For hair lightening:
  • With the tea on your hair, sit out in sunlight for 20-30 minutes while your hair dries (wear sunscreen to protect your skin!)
  • Rinse!

NOTE: You can repeat this treatment as often as every few days to weekly, though if the sun method is used frequently without replenishing moisture, it can be drying.

Ensure to follow up with a hydrating leave-in conditioner and an oil to seal in the moisture! For some brilliant oils to use to keep your hair feeling soft, take a look at this list.

Method 2: Chamomile Scalp Spray

If you want to solve scalp issues and promote hair growth, this is an easy way to do so, without having to soak your entire head in the tea.

  • Brew 2-3 bags of chamomile tea in 1-2 cups of water
  • Allow the tea to cool
  • Pour the tea into a spray bottle
  • Section your hair and spray your scalp with the tea
  • Gently massage your scalp for a few minutes to further promote blood flow
  • Rinse

This can be repeated every wash day as a pre-wash scalp treatment!

Chamomile for Hair: FAQ’s

Q: What is chamomile?

Chamomile is a plant that is part of the daisy family. It has been used for thousands of years as an herbal remedy for calming upset stomachs, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

Q: Can I leave chamomile tea in my hair overnight?

It probably wouldn’t cause harm to do so a few times, but it can be drying (especially for the ends of the hair) to leave chamomile in for long periods of time.

It is also damaging to the hair to sleep with it wet, so if you do leave it in, ensure that your hair is dry before going to bed.

Q: How long does it take for chamomile to lighten hair?

It will depend on the shade of your hair and how often you do the treatment. Lighter hair colors who repeat the treatment every few days may see a more noticeable difference after just a few weeks, whereas very dark shades may notice only a very subtle change and it will take longer.

Q: Does chamomile tea permanently lighten hair?

If used repeatedly over time, yes!

Q: What other teas I can use on my hair?

There are many others you can use, and this post is full of ideas for herbal teas that will help you get soft, shiny hair.
