It is also used in beauty products for hair and skin. Rosemary has a ton of benefits when used topically on the hair.

In the DIY beauty world, it’s most popularly known for helping boost hair growth.

How to Make Rosemary Water for Hair

Making your own DIY rosemary water is very easy, and you only need two ingredients!

You Will Need:

  • A handful of fresh rosemary (5-10 sprigs)
  • 6 cups distilled water
  • Saucepan with lid
  • Spray bottle
  • A funnel or measuring cup with a spout – something to help you pour the water into your spray bottle

If you are unable to find fresh rosemary, you can use whole dried rosemary instead. The amount of rosemary you use is flexible – the more you use, the stronger the rosemary water will be.

If you’ve got a green thumb, you can even grow your own!

This is what dried rosemary looks like.

Directions:

  1. In a saucepan, add the water and rosemary
  2. Bring the water to a boil
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and put a lid on the saucepan
  4. Let the rosemary simmer for 30 minutes
  5. Take the pot off the heat, and allow it to cool
  6. Remove the rosemary sprigs from the water, and transfer the cooled water into a spray bottle or mason jar (wait until the water has cooled before transferring it into your container)

You’ll notice as the rosemary simmers, the water turns a darker brownish color. This is completely normal.

BONUS TIP:  For an extra boost to your scalp health and hair growth, you can add in another natural ingredient such as lavender, cloves, or fenugreek seeds for extra soft hair. Your options are endless!

Always do a patch test when trying a new ingredient for the first time, especially if you are allergy prone or have sensitive skin. If you experience itching, burning or other signs of an allergic reaction, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.

How to Use Rosemary Water for Hair

There are a couple of ways you can use rosemary water on your hair. You can use it on wet or dry hair, anytime you want!

1. Scalp Spray

You can do this on towel-dried hair after you wash your hair and before you add your styling products, or at any time your hair needs a boost.

  • Spritz the rosemary water evenly on the scalp (and throughout the hair if desired – but make sure you focus on the scalp!)
  • Massage the scalp for a few minutes to stimulate more blood flow

NOTE: If you apply it as a scalp treatment in the evening, ensure your hair is fully dry before going to bed. Since hair is weaker and more fragile when it’s wet, sleeping on wet hair can cause damage and breakage.

2. Hair Rinse

You’ll do this method the same way you would do a tea rinse for your hair.

  • Pour your rosemary water over your entire head, ensuring that you fully coat the scalp
  • Squeeze out the excess, and secure the hair
  • Cover hair with a plastic cap, and drape a towel over your shoulders to catch the drips
  • Leave on for 20-30 minutes
  • Rinse
