How to Make Natural Shampoo for Black Hair: Instructions

Today we’re going to be using rhassoul clay (also known as ghassoul clay, or Moroccan clay), which is an amazing ingredient for natural hair. It originates in Morocco, and has been used for hundreds of years for skin and hair care. It’s rich in potassium, magnesium and silica, and here are a few reasons why it rocks:

  1. Cleanses the scalp and hair
  2. Makes the curls look more defined
  3. Decreases frizz and increases shine
  4. Helps to add volume
  5. Absorbs excess oil from the scalp
  6. Reduces flakes by gently exfoliating the scalp

This is the clay I use!

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup rhassoul clay
  • ½ cup aloe vera juice
  • ½ cup water
  • Non-metal spoon (do not use metal with clay)
  • Hair color applicator bottle
  • Bowl/container

NOTE: If you have shorter hair, you may want to use half of the amounts listed here. If you have any excess left over, you can store it in an sealed container for up to 3-4 days.

Directions

  • Combine the rhassoul clay, water and aloe vera juice – you can mix it in a bowl, but I find it easier to use a container with a lid, because you can shake it so it mixes much faster!
  • Transfer the mixture to the dye bottle

LONG HAIR TIP: leave a portion of the mixture in the bowl or jar, and dip your hair into it. I find this takes much less time than using the dye bottle to apply it to all of my hair.

  • Apply the mixture to the scalp and hair, thoroughly coating the scalp. You may want a towel around your shoulders to catch drips, as it has a very thin consistency
  • Massage into the scalp for a minute or two, then rinse out thoroughly
  • Always follow up your clay wash with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Check out this post for instructions on how to make an ACV rinse!

NOTE: This is a gentle cleanser, so use a clarifying shampoo at least monthly, especially if you use a lot of hair products that leave buildup in the hair and scalp.

DIY Natural Shampoo FAQ’s

Can I just use water instead of aloe vera juice?

Yes! The natural shampoo will still be effective, though the mixture will be slightly less hydrating for the hair. For for maximum benefits, I’d recommend keeping the aloe in the recipe.

How often can I use this natural shampoo?

This will depend on your hair type, how your hair and scalp respond to it, and how much product buildup you tend to have. Start with each wash day or once per week and see how your hair feels.

What hair types can use rhassoul clay?

All hair types and curl patterns can try this, though clay removes excess oil from hair so if your hair is already extremely dry, it may not be suitable.

Keep in mind that everyone’s hair responds differently, so be aware of your hair type and pay attention to how your hair looks and feels when trying a new treatment.

This rhassoul clay wash is an easy and effective way to cleanse the hair and scalp, and improve the health of your curly hair. Have you tried it yet?
