Brazil nut oil is made from the seeds (also known as Brazil nuts) of the Brazil nut tree. These trees can be found in the Amazon rain forest, within many areas of South America.

The scientific name of Brazil nuts is Bertholletia excelsa, and they are rich in many nutrients, vitamins and minerals, such as:

  • Fatty acids

It’s often used in skin care for its anti-aging properties. With it’s ability to moisturize and sooth the skin, it’s also helpful in healing eczema and psoriasis.

It is a fantastic oil to use in your hair care routine because it absorbs easily, without leaving a heavy, greasy feel.

This is especially perfect for those with low porosity or fine hair types. Here are some of the amazing things Brazil nut oil can do when used on your hair:

  • Hydrates the skin, helping to get rid of flakes and scalp itchiness

  • Make the hair feel softer and more manageable
  • Smooths the hair shaft, reducing frizz and adding shine
  • Moisturizes hair, reducing dryness
  • Prevents hair loss, with antioxidants fighting free radicals that may damage hair follicles

To get the amazing benefits of this oil, you can use it on your hair in a few ways:

  • As part of a DIY deep conditioning hair mask (recipes below!)
  • In your nightly hair care routine, as a daily moisturizer for your ends
  • In a hot oil treatment

Here are a few DIY hair mask recipes you can make to incorporate Brazil nut oil into your healthy hair routine.

You’ll want to apply these masks from the root to the tip of your hair, so your scalp can benefit as much as the rest of your locks.

We are applying these masks on damp hair so that we can lock in even more moisture for super hydrated hair! It can also make the treatments easier to distribute on your hair.

Make sure you do a patch test before using a new oil for the first time, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies.

1. Hydrating Hair Mask

  • Mix 1 part Brazil nut oil and 1 part honey (start with 3-4 tablespoons of each, increase the amounts if your hair is long)
  • Apply evenly to detangled, damp hair
  • Leave on for 30 minutes
  • Shampoo and condition as normal

Honey is a humectant (it attracts water) so it’s great for adding more moisture into the hair.

2. Coconut Oil Mask

  • Mix 1 part Brazil nut oil with 1 part fractionated coconut oil
  • Apply evenly to detangled, damp hair
  • Leave on for 30 minutes
  • Shampoo and condition

Fractionated coconut oil is great to use because it penetrates the hair shaft easier than regular coconut oil. It helps to add softness, strength and resilience to the hair.
